Let’s face it, the pressure in the construction industry is no joke. Tight deadlines, long hours, and physical work can take a toll on anyone’s mental health. That’s why RUOK? Day is so important—it’s a day for us to check in with our mates and make sure they’re handling the pressure okay.
RUOK? Day happens every year on the second Thursday of September, and it’s a reminder to ask the simple question: “Are you okay?”. It’s more than just small talk- that question could help save a life.
What Is RUOK? Day?
RUOK? Day was started back in 2009 by Gavin Larkin, who lost his dad to suicide. He wanted to stop others from going through the same pain by getting people to talk about what’s going on in their lives, especially before things get too tough. The idea is simple—ask the question, listen to the answer, and offer support
Why It Matters in Construction
In Australia, about 8.6 people take their lives every day, and roughly 65,000 try to. Construction workers face a heightened risk because of the stress and tough conditions on the job
Research shows that after hearing about RUOK? Day, more people feel confident asking their friends or coworkers if they’re okay and offering support
What Techskill Academy Is Doing
This year, Techskill Academy is stepping up for the construction industry by donating 50% of the proceeds from our Mental Health in Construction course from September 9th to 15th 2024
Why does this matter? Because this course is built for guys like you who are on the job site every day. It teaches you how to spot the signs of stress, anxiety, and depression in your crew, and gives you the skills to step in and help. It’s about looking out for your team and making sure everyone goes home safe—not just physically, but mentally, too.
It’s About More Than Just One Day
Even though RUOK? Day is on September 12, mental health is something we need to check in on all year round. Life’s tough, and things don’t always get better overnight. So, keep asking, keep checking in, and keep the conversation going.
Real Mates, Real Stories
Ever been on the job and noticed something wasn’t quite right with a mate? Maybe they were quieter than usual or just seemed off? Stories like this are common, and it’s important to act. By asking the question and being there to listen, you might help them through something bigger than you think.
What to Do if a Mate’s Not Okay
If a mate says they’re struggling, it’s not always easy to know what to do. First, listen without judging, and don’t try to fix it on the spot. Offer support and encourage them to talk to someone who can help, like a doctor or counselor. If it’s serious, make sure they get the professional help they need
