WARNING: Employees without the right project management skills could cost your business millions of dollars

THE CONSEQUENCES OF BAD PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Project management is integral to a successful business, regardless of which industry you work in. A PwC study of more than 10,000 projects across 200 companies, 30 countries, and various industries found only 2.5% of companies successfully completed all their projects.

Construction projects can be beset by delays, due to many factors such as a shortage of materials or labour, but a good project manager will ensure the delays are kept to a minimum or even eliminated. According to Deltek, a global provider of software solutions, even minor delays to construction projects could cost in the millions. A project valued at $50 million with a duration of three years could end up costing as much as $65 million with a 30% delay.

Source: Deltek

WHY DO PROJECTS FAIL?

Project management requires quality control, budgeting, and exceptional time-management. But when project management goes wrong its usually because of one (or more) of the following:

  • Lack of resources and talent
  • Communication breakdown(s)
  • Failure to identify roles and responsibilities
  • Lack of focused objective
  • Failure to stick to processes and plans

Therefore, making sure your employees have all the necessary tools at their disposal and the training they need is essential. You don’t want to see project failure and unnecessary budget blowouts.

EMPLOYEES WITHOUT THE RIGHT PROJECT MANAGEMENT SKILLS COULD POTENTIALLY JEOPARDISE YOUR BUSINESS.

A 2017 report from the US-based Project Management Institute found Australian companies on average wasted close to $110 million for billion dollars spent on infrastructure. PMI chief executive Mark Langley said the wastage was caused by a failure to retain good project staff.

“Champion organisations do this very well. One of the key things that they do, that Australia lags in, is defined career paths for project and program managers. There’s an opportunity for Australian organisations to start to invest in careers of project managers in both the public and private sector.” – PMI chief executive Mark Langley

If you are a business owner or CEO still unsure if it’s worth training your employees in project management courses, it’s time to re-evaluate your decision. Here’s four reasons why:

1. Good employees won’t stay

Research has found people who feel they are not developing are 12 times more likely to leave a company than those who feel they are getting the investment and training they need.

2. Every industry needs project managers

Although project management is usually associated with the building and construction sector, it is increasingly a skillset being used across a variety of industries. The Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM), the peak body for project management in the country, has close to 8,000 members working in a range of sectors. Industries such as IT and professional services are increasingly using project management to transform their businesses, upgrade their networks and structures, or work with a variety of clients.

Source: AIPM 2019 Report

3. Investing in your employees can lead to greater profits.

There is data to suggest companies that invest money in training their staff can see an average increase in profit of 24%. A short-term cost is likely to pay for itself, and more, in the long run if you are willing to make the choice to provide training opportunities for your employees.

4. Upskilling your staff creates an internal talent pipeline

Training your employees produces a larger pool of talent so people can continue to progress in your company. Studies have found Australian companies take an average of 33 days to fill vacancies, costing business upwards of $10,000.

HOW TO GET STARTED

You can invest in your employees with an online project management course, such as the Diploma of Project Management BSB50820. The course is designed by industry experts to ensure students learn the key skills and knowledge to follow best practice in project management.

Importantly, the qualification is endorsed by AIPM.

“AIPM endorses courses that consistently demonstrate outcomes aligned to a relevant Project Management methodology and which reflect industry standards and current best practice. These courses must show a commitment to professional development and evaluation of industry practices.” – Australian Institute of Project Management

How to become a project manager in the construction industry

Working as a project manager in the construction industry can afford you great job security, a healthy salary, and the chance to develop further leadership skills. So how can you become a construction project manager?

First, it’s important to understand why working as a project manager in the construction industry is a great career choice.

The Australian government’s Job Outlook estimates there are around 42,100 construction project managers working across the country, with demand very likely to increase in the future too. The construction industry is one of the country’s most important, employing around 1.2 million people. Project managers in the construction industry can earn up to $200,000 a year, and it can be a springboard to a position as a CEO.

So, now you know why working as a construction project manager is such an enticing job. What skills do you need, and what steps can you take to get there?

A project manager in the construction industry is responsible for overseeing every stage of a project. You will need to be in touch with internal and external stakeholders and make sure lines of communication are streamlined and easy to manage. You may be required to review architectural plans, co-ordinate and lead teams, manage work schedules, and procure key project resources.

Source: SEEK

One of the best ways to ensure you are prepared is by studying an online project management course, such as the Diploma of Project Management BSB50820. The course is designed by industry experts for people seeking to learn the key skills and knowledge to pursue a career as a project manager.

Importantly, the qualification is endorsed by the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM), the peak body for project management in Australia.

“AIPM endorses courses that consistently demonstrate outcomes aligned to a relevant Project Management methodology and which reflect industry standards and current best practice. These courses must show a commitment to professional development and evaluation of industry practices.” – Australian Institute of Project Management

Completing an AIPM endorsed online project management course can assist you in becoming a member, which includes numerous benefits, such as access to resources and mentorship.

WHO SHOULD CONSIDER BECOMING A PROJECT MANAGER?

If you are an experienced construction worker with a desire to take on more responsibility, you are ideally suited to following a career as a project manager. According to the Australian government Job Outlook people who are enterprising and practical are likely to be interested in a role as a construction project manager.

But, without the proper qualifications you may struggle to find work. AIPM said “a formal qualification in building or construction management is desirable, or at least five years of relevant experience” if you are hoping to take the next step in your career. You don’t want to risk missing out on work (and more money) because you lack the formal qualification.

How to start a career in construction

Have you been considering a career as a construction worker? Do you know what qualifications or experience you need to get your foot in the door?

There are many online construction courses which can help, depending on the type of construction work you are chasing.

Firstly, it’s important to know why pursuing a career in construction is a good idea.

The construction industry is one of the most significant sectors in the Australian economy. There is expected to be around 1.3 million jobs in construction in Australia by the year 2024, and the sector is likely to continue to expand due to government expenditure on infrastructure projects.

Source: Australian Industry and Skills Committee

In the building and construction industry there are many different career paths you could choose to follow, such as

  • Builder
  • Carpenter
  • Concreter
  • Plasterer
  • Landscaper
  • Painter
  • Plumber
  • Tiler
  • Stonemason
  • WH&S officer
  • Project manager

Here are 4 tips on how to start a career in construction:

  1. Get qualified – study an accredited construction course
  2. Attain your Construction White Card
  3. Get your skills recognised via RPL
  4. Get the right insurance – income protection/insurance you’ll need as a sole trader/business owner
GET QUALIFIED

In Queensland for example, completing the Low Rise Site Supervisor (Queensland) course is a great first step into the industry, as it requires no previous experience. Not only will you gain the skills and knowledge needed to flourish in the industry, you will also be eligible to apply to become a registered builder* after completing the course.

ATTAIN YOUR CONSTRUCTION WHITE CARD

You must hold a White Card to work on a construction site in Australia. You can get your white card by completing a construction induction course. Your white card will be valid in all states, so if you have the ambition to pursue construction jobs interstate you can do so with confidence.

GET YOUR SKILLS RECOGNISED VIA RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a skills assessment process which allows you to use your existing skills, expertise, and experience to demonstrate your competency and ability to perform construction work.

After you have gained some experience on the tools you could be able to complete a number, or all, of the units in the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) CPC50210, which could be your springboard to finding work as a site manager or foreman. Some courses, such as the Advanced Diploma of Building and Construction (Management) CPC60220 can only be completed through the RPL program.

GET THE RIGHT INSURANCE

If you are working for a company, you might consider getting income protection insurance. This will keep you covered against the risk of losing income through illness or injury which stops you from working.

If you decide to work as a sole trader, you may need a variety of insurances to protect your livelihood, such as public liability insurance, motor vehicle insurance and business insurance. You should also consider getting personal accident insurance and permanent disability insurance.

If you need more information about which course is right for you, get in touch with us today to speak with one of our education consultants.

“My experience was positive. The course was broken up into 6 sections making it easier to understand and complete. (2 units per section) The training provider was very understanding towards this being a part time study with work being our main focus. The teachers all seem to have a wide experience of knowledge allowing the course to be relatable within my own field. 10 out of 10 service.”

From my first call Guy was beyond helpful I was unsure about a lot of the process and he walked me through it. Called me 3-4 times during the process and was never late to call me when we planned a time. It was the easiest process. Would recommend !

I was recommended to Techskill Academy to refresh and improve my knowledge in building and obtain a Certificate IV in Building & Construction. I found them to be fantastic - very direct & professional in the assistance and advice offered to me. I also re-enrolled to obtain a Diploma in Building & Construction. With these two qualifications from Techskill, my builders licence was granted in NSW. I can’t thank you guys enough - especially Ronnie who assisted me and guided me through both courses, but more importantly the reduced fees offered to me for being an existing student. I eventually studied & obtained a third qualification - Diploma in Project Management from Techskill. Again, this was only possible with the constant assistance from Ronnie. I highly recommend Techskill to all tradespeople who want to improve their knowledge in the building industry. Ask Ronnie to assist you!
