What are some of the best jobs in the building and construction industry?

The building and construction industry is one of the most vital sectors of the Australian economy. The industry generates more than $360 billion and employs around 1.2 million people, across a range of construction jobs.

But what are some of the best jobs to pursue if you are looking for building and construction work?

1. BUILDER

Australians are spending record amounts on home renovations, and becoming a builder is a great way to take advantage of the boom. Registered builders in Australia can earn upwards of $150,000 a year, and there is expected to be plenty of construction work in the future too.

If you’re interested in fast-tracking your career as a builder you could complete the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) CPC40110. Not only could it be the perfect step to applying to become a licensed builder*, but you’ll also gain the skills and knowledge to potentially start your own business or run multiple building sites.

2. SITE SUPERVISOR

Site supervisors oversee and run operations on a building site to ensure the project runs smoothly. The average salary as a site supervisor is $110,000 a year, and there is work available on both residential and commercial construction sites.

Online courses include studying a Low Rise Site Supervisor (Queensland) or a Medium Rise Site Supervisor (Queensland). Both courses are great if you have little or no experience and want to get your foot in the door to start your career as a construction worker.

3. FOREPERSON

After you’ve gained some experience in the construction industry you might want to take the next step and become a foreperson. You could earn up to $150,000 a year working as a foreperson and overseeing and directing other construction workers.

Once you have been working in the industry for at least three years you could complete the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) CPC50210. The course is designed for construction workers who want to make a step up in their construction career, and provides students with knowledge of WHS obligations, commercial aspects of large projects, tendering processes, structural principles, and many more.

4. PROJECT MANAGER

Project management involves planning, managing, overseeing, and executing a construction project. Project managers earn an average of $130,000 a year in Australia in the construction industry.

The Diploma of Project Management BSB50820 is one of the most in-demand courses for people seeking to learn how to effectively manage the cycle of a project from start to finish. You’ll gain an understanding of project management methods and techniques, which will be transferable across several different industries.

5. LANDSCAPE CONSTRUCTION BUSINESS OWNER

Australians spend more than $6 billion a year on landscaping services, and the sector is expected to grow over the next decade. Owning your own landscaping business is a great way of securing construction work.

The Certificate III in Landscape Construction AHC30916 covers topics such as drainage installation, landscape features, paving and retaining walls, and also gives you an understanding of to start your own landscape construction business.

6. CONSTRUCTION MANAGER

Working as a construction manager affords you a comfortable level of job security, and a healthy salary. Construction managers can earn upwards of $200,000 a year.
